I’m quickly learning in my early stage as executive editor of TNH that recruiting can be one of the most difficult aspects of the job. I’ve been lucky enough to return many members from last year’s talented staff, but there is always room more. So tonight (and for the better part of the next few weeks) that’s what I turn my focus to.

The New Hampshire will be holding its first meeting tonight in our office (MUB 156) with the aim of recruiting new talented journalists, sales people and delivery drivers (and yes, there is talent in that). As always, all of our positions are available and we’re looking for more than just talent. Working at a school newspaper that admittedly doesn’t pay too well requires a committed staff. We’re willing to teach anyone any aspect of any job as long as they’re committed to getting better and putting in the time that improvement requires. So, here is a brief listing of positions that incomers can shoot for:

Editors: Nothing gets on the page without editors. We need students with a keen eye and students with the creativity for design. We’re looking for copy editors (to proof read) and designers to put stories on pages and make those pages appealing.

Writers: The bread and butter of a news organization. We hire more staff writers than any other position and feature more than 100 different writers each year. This is your chance to see your name in print and add clipping that will be valuable down the road.

Columnists: Contrary to writers, columnists are able to voice their opinion on the hot issues of campus, New Hampshire and beyond. We’re seeking a few opinionated students to submit bi-weekly columns.

Ad reps: This is how we make money (that we can in turn pay you with). We’re looking for outgoing people — experience isn’t required. However, you must be willing (and enjoy) talking to strangers and be comfortable making calls to companies seeking advertisements.

Delivery drivers: The papers make it your dorms somehow, right? Delivery drivers drop off newspaper across campus and surrounding towns on Tuesdays and Fridays between 12:30-3:30 p.m. Drivers must have that time slot open and own a car that can be used for delivery (we reimburse mileage).
